Sally always comes to school with bruises and says she fell down the stairs. Esperanza knows that Sally's father hits her. One day, Sally was going to stay the night with Esperanza's family. Her father came by and begged for Sally's forgiveness. She was alright until her father caught her talking to a boy, then he went crazy and Sally was missing from school.

After the monkey and it's family moved back to Kentucky, the garden took over. The garden was filled with flowers and wildlife and Esperanza and her friends loved to play there. The last time Esperanza visited the garden was when she almost killed herself. When Tito & friends stole Sally's keys, he refused to return them until she kissed them. Out of rage, Esperanza left and told Tito's mom, but she didn't care. She cried and cried alone in the garden and wanted to die.
